The term "kizomba" comes from the word “Kimbundo”, which literally means “party".  Kizomba music is usually sung in Portuguese.

Kizomba as a dance was born in the 1980's in Luanda (Angola), with Zouk influence and has its origin in Semba, a popular Angolan music style.

In the 1950's/60's people already danced Semba and other traditional dances in Angola.  Other cultural influences were also present in Angola due to colonization. These European influences together with the South American influences, Tango and Merengue, changed the way people danced during the “Kizombadas".  Therefore people began adapting these influences as well as Semba to the Kizomba music and Kizomba as a dance was created.  Nowadays, besides being extremely popular in Angola, Cape Verde and Portugal, Kizomba has spread across the world to countries such as England, France, Spain, Poland, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden, Belarus, Lithuania, Egypt, Switzerland, Serbia, Canada and the United States of America.
